Part 4: Let’s do a Neighborhood Walking Audit!
Let’s take a quick breather, find a bench, take a drink, and get ready for the rest of our walk audit! By now, you may have noticed a few intersections that are not very pedestrian friendly. Well, let’s face a rather disheartening truth. Our modern cities were build for cars, not pedestrians.
“Crosswalks were installed across four lanes, where before there were no crosswalks, with shortened crossing distances to improved pedestrian safety.” -Bloomberg.org
Recently, 26 U.S. cities were awarded grants to improve pedestrian safety by adding public art on the roadways that serve as crosswalks as part of the Asphalt Art Grant from Bloomberg Philanthropies. I think this is an incredibly inspiring project that we can implement on a smaller scale in our own neighborhoods with our friends and family!
