GREEN LEAF

Multigenerational Roommate House

This project creates a model for multi-unit conversion of single-family homes, a strategy which densifies, diversifies, and strengthens suburban neighborhoods without interrupting their character. This 2,400-square-foot home has been split into four studio apartments. Each has an outdoor entrance, but they are also all connected by interior doors that are locked and concealed within false cabinets. These doors allow the home to remain a single-family building legally, but also guarantee privacy for each tenant.

Before

After

As the housing shortage continues and housing prices continue to increase, the Green Leaf project proposes both an economic solution and alternate way of living. Inspired by the single-room occupancy and multi-generational models of the past, this retro-fit allows people to live together but maintain the kind of separation and privacy people generally expect in this day and age.
